How the quantity is calculated
Volume is length times width times thickness, converted to cubic metres. A 20 ft × 20 ft surface at 4 in is roughly 4 m³. The order allowance is added on top, because a prepared base is never perfectly level and running short mid-pour costs far more than a small surplus.
Choosing a thickness
A residential patio is often poured at 4 in. A driveway carrying a vehicle usually needs 5 to 6 in, sometimes more depending on soil and load. Confirm the thickness with the contractor doing the work: it changes the volume, and therefore the price.
Delivery only, or a complete project
Two very different needs sit behind the same search. If you already have a crew to place, texture and seal the surface, you need concrete delivered. What the estimate cannot know
The preliminary estimate is a per-square-foot range. It does not know the state of the ground, the excavation required, drainage, reinforcement, the distance from truck to surface, whether pumping is needed, or how many colours are involved. Those move the real price substantially.
